Bruno Mars Vs. Katy Perry on Billboard Hot 100

RiRi featuring Calvin Harris tops the Hot 100 for the sixth straight week. Only two other Rihanna singles have held the top spot this long. "Umbrella" (featuring Jay-Z) had seven weeks on top in 2007. Eminem's "Love The Way You Lie," on which Rihanna was featured, had seven weeks on top last year. "We Found Love" also tops the 2 million mark in U.S. digital sales this week.

Katy Perry's "The One That Got Away" holds at #9 on the Hot 100. Its airplay grew by 17%, but its digital sales dropped by 31%. So you might think it's probably out of the running to become a record-breaking sixth #1 single from Perry's Teenage Dream album. Think again. The song has been discounted to 69 cents in the iTunes Store, compared to $1.29 for most current hits.

Bruno Mars' "It Will Rain" holds at #3 for the second week. The song also tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week and jumps to #1 on Hot Digital Songs. The ballad, which is featured in the current #1 box-office hit The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1, is the first song from a movie to reach #1 on the digital sales chart since Taylor Swift's "Today Was A Fairytale" from the rom-com Valentine's Day in February 2010. Mars co-wrote and co-produced "It Will Rain" with Philip Lawrence and Ari Levine, his partners in The Smeezingtons. As such, Mars may soon have an Oscar nomination (for Best Song) to go with his multiple Grammy nominations.

Bruno Mars' "Grenade" returns to #1 on the Hot 100. It dethrones Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me," which debuted at #1 last week. This is the third appearance at #1 for "Grenade" in the past five weeks. After blasting onto the chart at #1 last week, Spears' "Hold It Against Me" drops to #6. That seems strange, but it's not unusual.  The last seven songs to debut at #1 spent just that one frame in the lead position. "Hold It Against Me" follows Ke$ha's "We R Who We R," Eminem's "Not Afraid," Spears' "3," and the American Idol cluster of Taylor Hicks' "Do I Make You Proud," Carrie Underwood's "Inside Your Heaven" and Fantasia's "I Believe."

The Green Hornet & Grenade Chart Impact!!!

"The Green Hornet" appears to have played to expectations for the four-day Martin Luther King holiday weekend.  The Sony Pictures action comedy is estimated to have grossed $40 million over the frame which is just slightly below industry pre-release polling.  However, considering the studio thought the film was dead in the water just last summer, that's still a major turnaround for the Seth Rogen reboot.

Meanwhile, Bruno Mars impacts the Billboard chart and circles back to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, as "Grenade" once again replaces Katy Perry's "Firework" at No. 1 (1-2).

"Grenade" supplanted "Firework" two weeks ago, only to have Perry's track reclaim the chart's lead spot for a fourth cumulative frame on last week's ranking. It is the first time two songs have alternated holds at No. 1 over four weeks since "Live Your Life" by T.I. featuring Rihanna traded spots with Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)" in December 2008. Mars' track sits atop Digital Songs for a fourth straight week with 275,000 downloads (down 35%), according to Nielsen SoundScan, as the post-holiday glow has finally worn off the digital download market with total sales dipping by 29% this week.

Threatening the reign of Mars' "Grenade" or the return of Perry's "Firework" to No. 1 next week will be the arrival of Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me," which was released near-simultaneously at radio (Jan. 10) and exclusively at iTunes (Jan. 11). With airplay off to a blazing start and track sales set to exceed 400,000 according to industry sources, a second No. 1 debut for the pop starlet is likely. She previously started at the summit with "3" on the chart dated October 24, 2009.
