Justin Bieber'sBelieve enters The Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 374K. The number is off a bit from the overly rosy 400K-440K projections that were floated last week. Even so, it's the biggest first-week sales tally by any album so far this year. And it's the biggest one-week sales tally of Bieber's career. There's just one potentially awkward wrinkle. The album displaces the latest by Bieber's mentor, Usher. The R&B star's Looking 4 Myself drops to #6 after an uncharacteristically soft debut (128K) at #1 last week. That was Usher's slimmest first-week sales tally since 1997.
Remarkably, this is the second time that Bieber has bumped Usher out of the #1 spot. In April 2010, My World 2.0 returned to #1, displacing Raymond V Raymond (which had interrupted its run on top). The two artists must not mind competing because this is the second time they've released albums just one week apart.
Bieber is the first artist in chart history to land four #1 albums or EPs while still in his teens. Believe follows My World2.0, the EP Never Say Never: The Remixes and Under The Mistletoe. And Bieber has nearly 18 months to add to this tally. He won't turn 20 until March 1, 2014.
Two artists landed three #1 albums while still in their teens. Britney Spears scored with …Baby One More Time, Oops!...I Did It Again and Britney, all by age 19. Miley Cyrus scored with Hannah Montana 2/Meet Miley Cyrus, Breakout and the Hannah Montana: The Movie soundtrack, all by age 16. (The Fine Print: The initial Hannah Montana TV soundtrack in 2006 also reached #1, but I didn't count it because it wasn't marketed as a Cyrus album.)
The Top Five: Justin Bieber'sBelieve debuts at #1 (374K). It's Bieber's fourth #1 album or EP; his sixth to reach the top 10…Kenny Chesney'sWelcome To The Fishbowl debuts at #2 (193K). It's Chesney's 10th top 10 album… Fiona Apple'sThe Idler Wheel Is Wiser debuts at #3 (72K). It's Apple's second top 10 album...Smashing Pumpkins'Oceania debuts at #4 (53K). It's the band's seventh top 10 album…The Rock Of Ages soundtrack jumps from #9 to #5 in its third week (49K).
The Second Five:Usher's Looking 4 Myself drops from #1 to #6 in its second week (48K)…Adele's 21 drops from #3 to #7 in its 70th week (48K). It has been in the top 10 the entire time…One Direction'sUp All Night drops from #6 to #8 in its 15th week (41K). The former #1 album has been in the top 10 the entire time… Luke Bryan'sTailgates & Tanlines rebounds from #13 to #9 in its 46th week (28K). This is its seventh week in the top 10…Rush's Clockwork Angels drops from #2 to #10 in its second week (27K).
This week is also happier week for Britney fans because Blackout is already PLATINUM from it's released date on Oct. 30, 2007 till certification date June 22nd, 2012, it's impact of Blackout Purchase Week Champaigne around the net.
Move over, Christina! Now that "The Voice" has wrapped, it's time for another Mouseketeer-turned-diva to judge future music stars: Britney Spears has reportedly signed a deal to be a judge on "The X Factor," according to E! News.
News first broke in early March that the pop star was in negotiations to join the panel of Fox's reality singing competition, and last month, it was reported that Spears was being offered $15 million for one season of the show — $3 million more than Jennifer Lopez earns as a judge on "American Idol."
"The contract is signed," a source told E! "There's been a lot of back and forth over the past few weeks as they negotiated the small details, but she's on. It's all completed and Britney is beyond excited."
In an April interview with TMZ, Cowell remained mum about the Spears negotiation rumors but admitted that he would "love" to have her on "X Factor."
"I think it would be a coup," he said. "I think she would be a fascinating person to sit next to, so we'll have to wait and see."
Spears will join returning mentors Cowell and record executive L.A. Reid on the panel.
Several stars — from Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato to Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey — were reportedly discussed as possible replacements for Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul before Spears became the front-runner. There's no word yet on whether one of those rumored contenders (or anyone, for that matter) will join the show as a fourth judge.
"The X Factor" returns to Fox in September, with auditions already under way. (MTV)
She'd be great television - Britney's short-lived and borderline-unwatchable "Chaotic" reality series with future ex-husband Kevin Federline notwithstanding, this girl lights up the small screen. More than fifteen incredible years into her career, after all her ups and downs, millions of people are still bizarrely fascinated with every single thing Britney says, does, or wears. Those millions of people would therefore likely tune in to Fox this fall to see what she says, does, or wears every week on "The X Factor." I admit I'd be one of those people.
She'd be good with kids - "The X Factor" age limit is much lower than its rival shows "American Idol" and "The Voice," and this resulted in many uncomfortable moments last season, notably the onstage meltdowns of tween contestants Rachel Crow, Drew Ryniewicz, Astro, and those poor kids in InTENsity, all of whom seemed ill-equipped to deal with the pressures of fame. Britney, a performer who grew up in the public eye (see her 1999 interview below)--and was even on the prototype talent-competition show "Star Search" at age 11 and lost--could surely empathize. Since "The X Factor" already has an "over 30's" category, I say add an "under 18's" category and have Britney mentor that group.
She's basically the biggest pop star on the planet - Simon always seems to want to outdo shows like "Idol" and "The Voice" on every level, and hiring Britney would certainly help push his bigger-and-better agenda. (A lack of A-list star power on "The X Factor's" Season 1 panel was reportedly one of the reasons why Paula and Nicole were let go.) Britney may not sell albums like she used to (Femme Fatale failed to reach platinum status), but she still sells tons of singles, concert tickets, and perfumes, and she's still one of the most recognizable celebrities in the world. So while "Idol" may have J.Lo, "The Voice" may have Xtina, and ABC's upcoming "Duets" may have just snatched up original Idol Kelly Clarkson, having Britney bragging rights would certainly trump all of those shows. Well played, Simon. Well played.
She seems a bit flighty - Okay, that sounds mean. Maybe Britney isn't quite as flaky as she sometimes comes across; I have noticed occasional moments of wit and lucidity in some of her interviews. But can she think on her feet on live TV? Can she make a quick decision on elimination nights? Can she critique a contestant without reading off a script? Can she read a script? I have my doubts. It's no wonder that Britney is "undergoing extensive media training," according to THR, to prepare for this new job.
She can't really sing - I suppose a lack of multi-octave vocal power never hurt Paula Abdul's ability to judge. But while I was never exactly Nicole Scherzinger's number-one fan, I will at least give her credit for being able to really belt it out. And some of the other women Simon was supposedly once courting to be on "The X Factor" (Mariah Carey, Beyonce, the late Whitney Houston) are/were great singers as well, the type of singers that many reality show contestants look up to. So I'm just saying, if Simon is upping the ante by hiring Britney to replace Paula, then he better start courting, say, Adele to fill Nicole's seat.
She might make the show too much about the judges - One of my biggest gripes about "The Voice" is that its superstar coaches often take away focus from the no-name contestants. With Britney on the panel, "The X Factor" would have the same problem. I mean, if everyone tuned in to watch Britney's latest antics, would any viewers even notice the singers competing on the stage? The folks at Fox probably wouldn't care--ratings are ratings, after all--but as the respective heads of Syco and Epic Records (the labels that sign the "X Factor" finalists), Simon and L.A. should be concerned about the long-term repercussions of having the show's contestants upstaged.
Do you think Britney would be a good "X Factor" judge? (Yahoo Music News)
Queen B, Britney Spears ended 2011 on a high note, what with the success of her Femme Fatale mega-tour and a proposal from longtime boyfriend Jason Trawick in December. In an upcoming issue ofV Magazine, the superstar discusses her tour and poses with her team of professionals, giving them glowing reviews as "her second family." Apparently, however, it's not Spears's goodwill that is standing out in this particular article. A commentary in the Daily Mail takes the accompanying photo into scrutiny, remarking on how quickly Spears seems to have slimmed down for this particular shoot.
"She has clearly been working out regularly in an effort to achieve the healthy and lean look," the Daily Mail notes judiciously.
Fans, on the other hand, are less polite about the matter, with an overwhelming amount of comments claiming that the shot clearly has been tampered with. A sampling: "Photoshopped a dillion!" "That's her head on someone else's body," "Even Ray Charles can see the terrible 'Cut and Paste' job that was done on Britney."
Spears has been looking fairly trim these days, so it's not as if the V shot is a tremendous diversion from her usual look--at least, weightwise. The photo does have an odd look to it, though. Compare for yourselves--here's Spears in September, just a short while after the V shoot was reported to have taken place.
V had no comment at the time this blog was written as to whether or not the photo had been altered. The issue with Spears will hit newsstands Thursday. To view more photos, visit the magazine's site.
What do you think? Is this photo simply Spears at her slimmest, or do you agree that it's a work of Photoshop art?
Britney Spears spawns her 11th top 10 hit with "I Wanna Go" jumps from #11 to #9. Remarkably, seven of these top 10 hits have come since Spears' public meltdown in 2007, when she seemed to be cracking under the pressure of a life in the tabloids. Happily, Spears got it together, personally and professionally, and has since delivered hit after hit. Her current album, Femme Fatale, is her first to spawn three top 10 hits. "Hold It Against Me" debuted at #1 in January. "Till The World Ends" peaked at #3 in May. Billboard is giving Spears credit for a top 10 hit for her guest role on a remix of Rihanna's "S&M." Joel Whitburn, who publishes a series of reference books based on the Billboard charts, isn't counting that as a top 10 hit for Spears. Let's take a look at this: Spears received featured billing on Rihanna's hit on the Hot 100 (as published in Billboard) just once. The very next week, the billing reverted back to simply Rihanna. I agree with Whitburn that Spears' period of prominence on this recording was too fleeting to have this count forever as a top 10 hit for her. Thus, I count "I Wanna Go" as Spears' 11th top 10 hit, not her12th.

We got several emails from viewers on Friday last week suggesting we get this video into the show... but it was too late to make space in an already crowded newscast. Flash forward two days and now this group of guys and girls in uniform lip synching to "Hold it Against Me" by Britney Spears has over 2 MILLION hits on YouTube. It's really well done and pretty funny. Senior Producer Susan and I especially love the shot of 2 the guys on the hill dancing... very cool. Even Britney herself tweeted that she is "in LOVE" with the clip.
