Adele & Whitney Houston Top Billboard Album!

Adele's 21 logs its 21st week at #1 on The Billboard 200, which is the longest that any album has remained on top since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales for Billboard in 1991. 

The album sold 730,000 copies in its 52nd week, which is more than any album has sold this deep into its chart run. It blows past a record set nine years ago by Norah Jones' Come Away With Me, which sold 621K in its 53rd week in March 2003. Both albums owed their late surges to a Grammy sweep. Jones won five awards; Adele won six. This is the longest that an album by a female solo artist has held the top spot since the album chart became a weekly feature in 1956. 21 surpasses Whitney Houston's The Bodyguard, which logged 20 weeks on top in 1992-1993.

Adele has a second album in this week's top five. Her 2008 debut album 19 jumps from #9 to #4, its highest ranking to date. Adele's two albums sold a combined 817K copies this week, which is more than all the other albums in the top 18 combined (809K).

Katy Perry Tops Billboard Chart!

Katy Perry leads the charge as "Part Of Me" debuts at #1 with first-week sales of 411K. Adele has three songs in the top 10 (a first for a female lead artist) in the first full week following her Grammy sweep. Whitney Houston, Kelly Clarkson and Nicki Minaj are also listed in the top 10. A female-led collabo, "We Found Love" by Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris, brings the tally up to eight.

Here's another indication of how dominant women are in pop these days. Five of the last six songs to enter the Hot 100 at #1 are by female solo artists: Britney Spears (twice), Ke$ha, Lady Gaga and now Perry.  The only male artist to debut at #1 in the last five years is Eminem.

Only one song by a female solo artist has had a greater first-week digital sales tally than "Part Of Me" rang up this week. Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" started with sales of 448K a year ago. (Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me" also bowed with sales of 411K, though Spears' exact total was a bit less than Perry's.) Both of those songs also debuted at #1.

Adele & Babyonce Break New Records!

Adele's 21 logs its 15th week at #1 on The Billboard 200, which equals the mark set in 1971 by Carole King's Tapestry. Since 1956, when the album chart became a weekly feature, only one other album by a female artist has logged 15 or more weeks at #1: Whitney Houston's 1992 soundtrack to The Bodyguard (which had 20 weeks on top).

Next month, Adele is expected to tie King again. Adele is almost certain to win Grammys for Album, Record and Song of the Year. That would make her only the second female solo artist to win in all three categories. King swept the boards in March 1972 with Tapestry (Album), "It's Too Late" (Record) and "You've Got A Friend" (Song).

21 also returns to #1 in the U.K. This is its 19th week at #1 in that country. That's the longest run at #1 in the U.K. by any album since Simon & Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water logged 33 weeks on top in 1970-1971.

21 is first album to spend 15 or more weeks at #1 in both the U.S. and the U.K. since the Bee Gees' Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, which topped the U.S. chart for 24 weeks and the U.K. chart for 18 weeks in 1978.

Besides 21 and Fever, only four other albums in chart history have logged 15 or more weeks at #1 in both countries. The first to do so was the aforementioned Broadway cast album to My Fair Lady (15 weeks in the U.S., 19 weeks in the U.K.). It was followed by the 1958 soundtrack to South Pacific (31 weeks in the U.S., 115 weeks in the U.K.), Elvis Presley's 1961 Blue Hawaii soundtrack (20 weeks in the U.S., 18 weeks in the U.K.) and the Beatles' 1967 Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (15 weeks in the U.S., 27 weeks in the U.K.).

Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 Billboard 200 albums :

1. Adele, 21, 124,000. The album logs its 15th week at #1. This is its 46th week in the top 10. The sales tally includes 44K digital copies, which puts the album at #1 on Top Digital Albums for the 10th week. Four songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by "Set Fire To The Rain," which jumps from #6 to #3.

2. Drake, Take Care, 42,000. The former #1 album holds at #2 in its eighth week. It has been in the top 10 the entire time. Five songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by "Headlines," which drops from #20 to #29.

3. The Black Keys, El Camino, 42,000. The album jumps from #7 to #3 in its fifth week. It has been in the top 10 the entire time. "Lonely Boy" jumps from #133 to #88 on Hot Digital Songs.

4. Young Jeezy, TM:103 Hustlerz Ambition, 36,000. The album dips from #3 to #4 in its third week. "I Do" (featuring Jay-Z and Andre 3000) drops from #165 to #171 on Hot Digital Songs.

5. Coldplay, Mylo Xyloto, 28,000. The former #1 album jumps from #8 to #5 in its 11th week. This is its seventh week in the top 10. Two songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs.  "Paradise" jumps from #37 to #32. "Princess Of China" (featuring Rihanna) re-enters at #158.

6. Rihanna, Talk That Talk, 27,000. The album jumps from #9 to #6 in its seventh week. This is its fifth week in the top 10. Two songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs. "We Found Love" (featuring Calvin Harris) drops from #2 to #4. "You Da One" jumps from #25 to #23.

7. SafetySuit, These Times, 27,000. This new entry is an iTunes exclusive for one week.

8. LMFAO, Sorry For Party Rocking, 25,000. The album drops from #5 to #8 in its 29th week. This is its second week in the top 10. Three songs from the album are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by "Sexy And I Know It," which dips from #1 to #2.

9. Various Artists, Now 40, 24,000. The album inches up from #10 to #9 in its ninth week. This is its sixth week in the top 10.

10. Florence + the Machine, Ceremonials, 24,000. The album drops from #6 to #10 in its 10th week. 

This is its third week in the top 10. "Shake It Out" jumps from #124 to #73 on Hot Digital Songs.

Adele's 2008 debut album, 19, drops from #11 to #13. This is the 13th time in the past year that Adele has had two albums in the top 20. 19 is #1 on Top Catalog Albums for the 30th week. Only one other debut album has spent this many weeks at #1 on the catalog chart. That's Creed's 1997 album My Own Prison, which topped the catalog chart for 54 weeks in 2000-2001. Will Adele match that long run? At this point I wouldn't bet against her, would you?

Adele's DVD Live At The Royal Albert Hall sold 24K copies this past week. This brings its six-week total to 476K.

Beyonce & Jay Z new baby Blue Ivy Carter. For obvious reasons. But also because the new Princess of Pop, daughter of Jay-Z and Beyoncé, makes her recorded debut, gurgling on the hip-hop star's happy, gospel-ish and clearly rushed "Glory" (the "feat. B.I.C." after Jay-Z's name is a nice touch). Released January 9th, it was too late to make this week's charts and isn't on sale via iTunes. Nonetheless, the most popular version of the video, which arrived on Jay-Z's website two days after the Exalted One's birth, is up to 1.4 million YouTube views. That's probably not enough to boost the song into pop-hit territory, but it's a nice little publicity boost for both singers during an (understandably) inactive time in their careers. Isn't that what children are for?

Adele Vs. Rihanna on Billboard Charts!

Adele's "Someone Like You" holds at #1 for the fifth straight week.  "Rolling In The Deep" was #1 for seven weeks earlier this year. Adele is the first female solo artist to log five weeks at #1 in a calendar year with two strictly solo recordings. Beyonce, Monica and Mariah Carey also did it (in 2003, 1998 and 1995, respectively), if you include collabos.
 

"We Found Love" by Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris leaps from #6 to #2 in its fifth week on the Hot 100. In addition, the song holds at #1 in the U.K. for the third straight week. It's Rihanna's longest-running #1 in the U.K. since "Umbrella" (featuring Jay-Z) topped the chart there for 10 weeks in 2007.

Adele Likes You on Top Billboard!

"Someone Like You" a smash hits from Adele continues to the top in its third week at #1 on the Hot 100 and also tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week. Adele is one of only four lead artists to have two or more 2-million sellers in 2011. Katy Perry leads the pack with three. Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga have also had two. The difference, of course, is that Perry, Mars and Gaga all but define contemporary hit radio. Their records are mostly upbeat, hook-filled and ultra-catchy. Adele also gets played on contemporary hit radio, but she stands apart from it. She's definitely the one in this foursome who "doesn't fit" with the others.

Adele Is Back on Top Billboard!

Adele's "Someone Like You" jumps from #19 to #1 in its 9 week on Billboard Hot 100. Adele performed the stark ballad on MTV's Video Music Awards, which gave it the boost it needed to go all the way. The song jumps from #11 to #1 on Hot Digital Songs. It sold 275,000 copies this week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That's the biggest weekly total by any song since Adele's previous hit, "Rolling In The Deep," sold 297K copies in May, when it was in its third week at #1. "Someone Like You" jumps from #42 to #19 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart. It registered 46 million "all-format audience impressions," according to Nielsen BDS. That's up a whopping 59% over the previous week.

UK Invasion Billboard Charts!

Summer banger hits, "Party Rock Anthem" by LMFAO feat. Lauren Bennett & GoonRock still tops the Hot 100 for the fourth straight week. LMFAO is the first ongoing group or duo to have a song spend four weeks at #1 since the Black Eyed Peas held the top spot for 26 straight weeks in 2009 with "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling." Adele's 21 also holds at #1 in the U.K. for the 18th week and returns to #1 Billboard 200 in its 22nd week. This is the longest run at #1 in the U.K. since the The Bee Gees' Saturday Night Fever soundtrack had 18 weeks on top in 1978. While Amy Winehouse Back To Black re-enters the U.K. chart at #53, even though the tracking week there ended Saturday, the day she died. The album logged two weeks at #1 in the U.K. in January 2007. A deluxe edition hit #1 in March 2008. Winehouse, of course, paved the way for such English soul-pop singers as Adele, Duffy, Estelle and Lily Allen.

Lady Gaga's Born This Way successful sale her album and  hits 1,108,000 copies in  first week, Gaga is the second biggest one-week album selling by a female artist. Adele Vs. Lady GaGa on Billboard!

Adele "Rolling In The Deep" stays at Top Billboard this week for the second week in a row. It's old  about 353K copies this week, the biggest one-week total for any song since Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" sold 509K copies in its second week in February. By contrast, "Rolling In The Deep" is in its 19th week. It's only the fifth song in digital history to sell 350K or more copies this deep into its chart run.

Lady Gaga's "The Edge Of Glory" debuts at #3, giving Gaga three songs in the top 30 on the eve of the release of her second full-length album, Born This Way. Her former #1 smash "Born This Way" dips from #18 to #19. "Judas," the follow-up, drops from #19 to #27. (news.music.yahoo)
